Challenges of Parenting a 4-Month-Old Baby Apr 06 , 2023

Milk refusal

At this stage, some babies may become easily distracted while feeding and even show clear signs of resistance towards breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, frequently pausing during feeds or losing interest after a few sips. The milk refusal period usually lasts for 2-3 weeks and does not usually affect the baby's overall health and development.

Solutions:

1. Do not force-feed the baby and avoid feeding them while they are drowsy or sleeping.

2. Keep the surroundings calm and quiet during feedings and avoid overstimulating the baby.

3. Increase the time between feedings slightly, such as extending from a 3-hour feeding schedule to a 4-hour schedule, to increase the baby's hunger and willingness to feed.

4. For breastfeeding mothers, using a scissor hand gesture to pinch the nipple can help slow down the milk flow and decrease the amount of milk output.

5. For bottle-fed babies, consider adjusting the flow rate of the nipple to match the baby's age and needs.

6. Encourage the baby to be more active during waking hours through tummy time, bathing, or swimming.
