Challenges of Parenting a 10-Month-Old Baby Dec 19 , 2023

Separation Anxiety

At this stage, babies suddenly become clingy and cry often, unwilling to let you out of their sight. Even brief separations can cause them to express their emotions with tears. This is a sign of their cognitive development maturing. Separation anxiety typically begins at 9 months and peaks between 10-18 months, gradually fading away after 18-24 months.

Solutions:

1. Play peek-a-boo games with your baby, and let them know that you're still there when you leave briefly. Gradually increase the duration of your absence, so your baby learns that you'll return soon.

2. When you go out, say goodbye to your baby and promise to return at a certain time. Don't sneak away because you're afraid of your baby's crying, which will only make them feel insecure. For example, say, "Mommy will be back when you finish your dinner."

3. If your baby has a soothing towel, use it to soothe them. If not, leave a small item with your scent on it for them to hold onto.

4. After a bath, give your baby a massage to increase intimacy between you and your baby.
